About Raigad: Raigad is one of the five districts of the Konkan region of Maharashtra in India. Historically it is famous for the Raigad fort, the capital of The Maratha King, Shivaji, who established a Maratha kingdom in the 16th century. The majority of the people of Raigad are farmers or serving Indian defense forces. Recently Raigad has been developing into a very attractive tourist zone with its long stretches, beautiful & serene beaches, and forts on land as well as in seawater. It is also gaining popularity for agro-tourism. It has the advantage of proximity to Mumbai city, the financial capital of India.
Raigad is known for Rice, broad beans, white onion, coconut & areca orchards, and seafood -Pomfret, Mackerel, and Bombay duct.
Tourism in Raigad: With the rapid growth of the inflow of tourists hospitality business in Raigad is booming. Many five-star and four-star hotels have come up in Alibaug, the district headquarter, Panvel, and nearby towns. There are many small hotels and a pretty good number of Bread and Breakfast centers under the umbrella of the Maharashtra state tourism development corporation (MTDC). Consequently, there is a substantial increase in demand for skilled and managerial staff in the hospitality industry in the district. Presently demand is partly fulfilled by importing personnel from Mumbai city.
Education: Raigad though very close to Mumbai is still socioeconomically not so well progressed as compared to Pune and Thane, the adjoining districts. It has very few educational institutes imparting vocational education.
First College Affiliated to Mumbai University: Navyug college of hotel and Tourism management established in 2005 is the first college in the district to get affiliated with Mumbai University.
